Hawthorne Lofts is part of the Salem Schools project that also includes Residences at St. James. Salem Schools entails the extensive renovation of two former schools into modern and energy efficient affordable housing. This project is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in late Fall/Winter 2025.

Hawthorne Lofts consists of a mix of 29 studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments with a preference for artists in a beautiful, historic school building with large windows, high ceilings, and excellent natural light throughout. In addition, the former auditorium has been converted into 10 micro studios, including 2 sound studios, for artists to rent. Residents of Hawthorne Lofts will be given first preference for these micro studios.
Hawthorne Lofts is in the heart of Salem’s downtown with all the amenities that it has to offer, including plenty of shops and restaurants. The building is within walking distance of Salem’s waterfront and Pickering Wharf, Salem Common, the Peabody Essex Museum, the Punto Urban Art Museum, Artist’s Row and the Essex Pedestrian Mall as well as the MBTA’s bus and commuter rail station for access to Boston and the rest of the North Shore.
Hawthorne Lofts features apartments at the 30%, 60%, and 80% Area Median Income (AMI) levels.
