Residences at St. James is part of the Salem Schools project that also includes Hawthorne Lofts. Salem Schools entails the extensive renovation of two former schools into modern and energy efficient affordable housing. This project is currently under construction with occupancy expected in late Fall 2025.
The Residences at St. James consists of 32 studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments for households whose Head of Household or spouse of the Head of Household is 62 years of age or older in a beautiful, historic building with large windows, high ceilings and lots of natural light. It has a community room, laundry facilities, outdoor patio and on-site parking.
The Residences at St James features apartments at 30% and 60% Area Median Income levels.
The Residences at St. James is located at 160 Federal Street in the heart of the McIntire Historic District and just a few steps away from the Mayor Jean A. Levesque Community Life Center (Senior Center) where residents can access a variety of services and activities, including cultural programs, exercise classes, book clubs, hot lunches, registration for transportation, supportive services and other programs. It is also within walking distance to downtown restaurants and shops, Leslie’s Retreat Park, and close to the MBTA’s bus and commuter rail station.
